WHO WE ARE
Between2Pines is a family-run consultancy led by principal engineer Jack Pines, supported by a network of trusted collaborators and mentees. We bring deep experience in distributed systems, cloud architecture, and developer enablement — and we’re building a community grounded in mentorship, integrity, and thoughtful engineering.
Between2Pines began with a simple idea: great systems come from environments where people can do their best work. From a small farm in the Pacific Northwest, we’ve grown into a mission-driven studio that blends principal-level consulting with mentorship, creative problem‑solving, and care.
We don’t just deliver software or data pipelines — we help teams think more clearly, build more sustainably, and grow with intention. Whether guiding clients through architectural decisions or helping early-career engineers debug their first project, we bring the same values to every conversation: clarity, compassion, and craftsmanship.

Our name was inspired by the John Muir quote:
"Between every two pines is a doorway to a new world."

Principal-Level Consulting (Jack)
Jack leads all architectural direction, systems design, modernization strategy, and high‑leverage engineering work. This includes:
- distributed systems architecture
- cloud platform design
- workflow automation
- developer experience improvements
- technical leadership coaching
- fractional Staff/Principal Engineer engagements
Scoped Delivery Work (Junior Engineers)
For engagements that include early-career engineers, such as Jack’s son, we structure the work around:
well-defined deliverables
- POCs and prototypes
- implementation tasks within an established architecture
- hands-on learning guided by senior oversight
- real-world experience without placing them in over-their-head roles
This is not an internship model. Junior engineers contribute real work with real impact — but always within a system designed and overseen by a senior architect.
